Healthier Shamrock Shakes comin’ at you just in time for St. Patricks Day!
Can you tell that I like St. Patrick’s Day?? We’re big on Irish traditions in my family – going to Irish Fest Milwaukee every year (If you live anywhere near Milwaukee, you NEED to check it out), going out for Irish breakfast on St. Patrick’s Day, having my Mom’s Irish Stew, and of course – treating ourselves to a shamrock shake!
Fun fact: the only time I was late to school EVER in my grade school career was one year on St. Patrick’s Day, when my Dad took me out for Irish breakfast before school (as was our tradition!)
We got to the school JUST as they were locking the front doors – if the doors were locked when you arrived, that meant you were late.
I was SO MAD because the clock read 7:59 a.m. as I was tugging on the locked doors. So, I was deemed tardy. And, when you’re late, you have to sign a log in the office giving the excuse for your tardiness — so my dad and I wrote in the school tardy log that “Stephanie was late because she was out at the Irish pub”
Best. Excuse. Ever.
Back to the shake – The older I get, the less I can handle these over-the-top sugary treats. And man, are Shamrock Shakes over the top! I don’t want to name any names, but a lot of the store-bought/pre-made shakes like this out there have anywhere from 50 to 115 grams of sugar and 600 – 800 calories.
Now – I’m not saying it’s bad to splurge once in a while – but that is a LOT of sugar! Having that much sugar at once soooo does not make my body feel happy.
I decided to come up with my own Shamrock Shake recipe this year – it’s got way less sugar (about 15-30 grams, depending on what type of ice cream you use), it’s way lower in calories, and it’s got a super sneaky healthy ingredient – kale!
I know, I know – you’re thinking “Man, why is this girl trying to get me to ruin a SHAKE with KALE???” The truth is – you can’t even tell it’s in there. I totally tricked Grant with these shakes (hehe, sorry!). He’s a huge skeptic when it comes to adding secret healthy ingredients to things – and he couldn’t tell there was kale in this!
It is possible to have a creamy and delicious shake that still tastes great, without spending the rest of the day in a sugar coma!
Did I mention – it takes about 5 minutes to throw this together? It’s quick, easy, healthier – and super festive! If you’re into spiked drinks, I bet this could be good with a hint of Bailey’s!
Healthier Shamrock Shake
Ingredients
- 1 Pint Halo Top Mint Chip ice cream Or any pint of mint chip ice cream, but I like this one because the whole pint is relatively low in sugar + calories, and high in protein!
- 1 cup kale leaves
- 1/2 cup milk of choice I used regular dairy milk
- 2 TBS chocolate chips
Instructions
- Blend the ice cream, milk, and kale leaves until combined. Top with the chocolate chips and enjoy immediately!
- *Note: If you want a thicker shake, try adding a few pieces of frozen banana!
