Ingredients

  • 1 loaf good quality brioche bread we love Aldi's and Trader Joe's brioche!
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 and 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 TBSP maple syrup
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Make the Custard: Whisk all ingredients together in a large, shallow dish or bowl.
4 eggs, 1 and 1/4 cup milk, 2 TBSP maple syrup, 3/4 tsp cinnamon, 3/4 tsp nutmeg, 1/8 tsp ground cloves, 1 tsp vanilla, pinch of salt
  • Prep for Cooking: Heat griddle or a large skillet over medium high heat and spray well with cooking spray or use butter to grease. Set your oven to warm so you can keep cooked french toast slices on a baking sheet inside the oven to stay warm until ready to serve, or get out a large serving plate and foil.
  • Cook the French Toast: Give the egg mixture another whisk in case anything has settled (the spices like to do that). Working with a few pieces at a time, soak each piece of bread on both sides for about 2-4 seconds if using the thicker brioche (like the one from Trader Joe's). (And, yes, I counted!) Aim for 1-3 seconds if you're using a thinner bread (standard sandwich bread width slices). We want the bread to be moistened through but not soggy.
Fry on heated and greased griddle/pan until golden brown, about 2-4 minutes per side. Flip and repeat on the other side. If the french toast seems to be browning too quickly at any point, turn the heat down a bit. Keep cooked slices on the pan or plate you prepped in the previous step so it all stays warm until you're finished cooking!

  • Serve + Store: Enjoy immediately! Serve with butter, maple syrup, fresh fruit, powdered sugar, nutella, or any other toppings your heart desires.
Store leftovers, covered, in the fridge for 3-4 days. Reheat in microwave.

Notes

NOTE: Serving size obviously depends on a few things here - amount of slices of bread in the loaf you use, how many slices each person eats, etc. The TJ's bread has 12 slices and I estimated 4 servings (3 slices per person). The good news is that you can absolutely double this recipe if you need to feed a larger group!
