I’m so excited to be sharing Red Star Yeast’s New Platinum Instant Sourdough Yeast + their launch sweepstakes with you today! I just attended the product launch last week in Chicago, Illinois, where we learned all about baking with Sourdough Yeast, and learned how to make authentic Italian Pizza with the sourdough yeast at the North American Pizza and Culinary Academy!
This post is created in partnership with Red Star Yeast and I was compensated to attend this event. All opinions are my own.
What is Platinum Instant Sourdough Yeast?
Red Star has created an amazing shortcut that’s perfect for everyone who loves the taste of sourdough, but doesn’t know how to make a sourdough starter, or is intimidated by the whole sourdough process (aka – me!).
Real sourdough cultures are added to their regular Platinum Yeast, creating a unique two-in-one blend of instant yeast and natural dough strengtheners for a superior rise, both before and during baking. And, you get the same authentic sourdough flavor that you’d get through traditional methods of baking with sourdough! This is pretty ground-breaking for home bakers – and Red Star has been creating the best yeast for over a century, so if anyone knows yeast – it’s them.
How do I use it?
One packet of the Platinum Instant Sourdough Yeast can be substituted for one packet of regular Platinum Instant Yeast – the packet is so much larger because of the addition fo the Sourdough culture! You can use the sourdough yeast in any recipe that you would use a full packet (equal to 2 1/4 tsp or 1/4 ounce) of regular platinum yeast in. It’s NOT meant to be substituted for any recipe that calls for a traditional sourdough starter.
Be sure to visit Red Star’s website for more information and recipes! You’ll feel like a baking rockstar the minute you taste your first sourdough bake!

Recipes to use Sourdough Platinum Yeast in:
One packet of the Platinum Instant Sourdough Yeast can be substituted for one packet of regular Platinum Instant Yeast – the packet is so much larger because of the addition fo the Sourdough culture! We don’t recommend trying to use a partial packet because it would be impossible to tell how much yeast and how much sourdough culture you’d be getting if you only used half the packet. Red Star Yeast has TONS of recipes on their website – here are a few of theirs (and mine) that would be amazing as sourdough variations.
- Homemade Naan – Homemade Naan is super easy to make – we love making this as the base for personal pizzas!
- Cast Iron Margherita Pizza – This pizza recipe would work perfectly with the Platinum Instant Sourdough Yeast if you double the recipe – more pizza is never a bad thing!
- Apple Cinnamon Pretzel Challah – Imagine how beautiful this loaf would look on your holiday table! I can practically taste that spiced apple filling.
- Broccoli Cheddar Soup – This isn’t a sourdough-compatible recipe, but it IS the perfect soup to pair with your first sourdough loaf!
- Classic Brioche – We got to try these at the Sourdough It Up! event and they were incredible! Soft, pillowy, and so flavorful!
- Soft Pretzel Bites – Who doesn’t love a good sourdough pretzel? And bite size food is always cuter!
- Homemade Pizza Crust – I couldn’t leave out pizza! This is a simple crust recipe that you can use with any of your favorite toppings.
I can’t wait to see what you make with your newfound sourdough baking powers!
After spending the first part of the day at the North American Pizza Culinary Academy, learning about sourdough and authentic Italian pizza, we visited La Fournette – an authentic French Bakery in Chicago! We were able to see how they make their baguettes and croissants, and we got to taste a little bit of everything – SWOON! We all got to take home a freshly baked baguette – they are works of art! I don’t think I’ve ever eaten as much bread in a day as I did that day – it was a carb-filled dream!
