Ingredient Overview:

As always, the full recipe with measurements & directions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post. Use the table of contents (back at the top, below the first image, to navigate).

  • Milk – Use any type of milk you like (unsweetened almond milk, oat milk, lactose-free, etc.). I love Fairlife for the extra protein!
  • Spinach – This can be frozen or fresh baby spinach.
  • Fruit – Use frozen ripe bananas, strawberries, and mango chunks. Frozen fruit creates the creamy texture, so be sure to use frozen fruit.
  • Chia Seeds and Ground Flax Seeds- These plant-based powerhouses add protein and fiber! They are optional, however.
  • Protein Powder – This Vital Proteins one is the only one I’ve ever tried that truly doesn’t add any weird taste to my food – not sponsored, just a fan!

Recipe Variations

  • Fruit – Use any combo of frozen fruit you like! Fresh fruit will not give a creamy consistency.
  • Leafy Greens – Use spinach or baby kale. I like to use it frozen. This gives the smoothie extra nutrition and the vibrant green color!
  • Nut Butters – Add more protein, healthy fats, and a delicious nutty taste by blending in a few tablespoons of peanut butter or almond butter.
  • Dairy-free – Use your favorite dairy-free yogurt & milk.
  • Vegan – Use the dairy-free swaps and maple syrup instead of honey for a vegan smoothie.

How to Make the Best Green Smoothie recipe:

Prep: Place all ingredients in the blender in any order, but do start with the milk.

Blend: Blend on high until smooth and creamy! Add an extra splash of milk if things are getting stuck/not blending well.

Serving + Storing:

Try sprinkling on some extra chia seeds for a nice bit of crunch.

You can even pour the thick liquid into a bowl and load up with toppings, like fresh sliced strawberries and banana, to make a creamy green smoothie bowl!

Enjoy immediately!

Expert Success Tips:

  • High-powdered Blender – A high-powered blender (like a vitamix – not sponsored!) with sharp blades is necessary to fully pulverize the spinach and fruit.
  • Adding Liquid – If the smoothie seems too thick you can add more milk, a little at a time.

FAQs:

How do I make a larger batch of smoothies?

This recipe makes one large smoothie, or two smaller glasses. Easily double the ingredients to make twice as many servings. But any more than that and you’ll need to work in batches.

How do you make a green smoothie more creamy?

For an even creamier smoothie you can add extra yogurt a tablespoon at a time as you blend the ingredients in the blender. Adding more frozen fruit will thicken it also.

Special Tools:

  • High-speed Blender – I used to feel kind of meh about smoothies – but having a high-powered blender (like my Vitamix, which I LOVE) makes a huge difference! The texture comes out like a milkshake!

Notes

Frozen Fruit: Your fruit MUST be frozen to achieve that luscious milkshake texture.
Protein Powder: Nutrition info doesn’t include protein powder, since they’re all a bit different. The one I use (Vital Proteins) adds 70 calories and 18 grams of protein from two scoops!
