Why you’ll love these Pull Apart Rolls:

  • Buttery Bread + Cheesy Goodness – Gooey melty cheese is stuffed inside soft and fluffy dinner rolls and brushed with garlic herb butter. Need I say more?
  • 5 Ingredients – You only need a package of pre-made frozen rolls and a handful of pantry staples!
  • Shortcut Recipe – There’s a time & place for homemade dinner rolls, but these are the way to go when you don’t have time to watch dough rise!
  • Feeds a Crowd – This recipe makes at least 15 rolls and is my go-to recipe for game day, holidays, and just about any occasion!

Ingredient Overview:

As always, the full recipe with measurements & directions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post. Use the table of contents (back at the top, below the first image, to navigate).

  • Pre-Made Bread Dough – I used Rhodes Thaw, Rise, ‘N Bake Rolls from the freezer section for this recipe, but you could also use their frozen bread loaves and cut the thawed dough into pieces. Any other similar ready-made bread dough or pizza dough should work (fresh or frozen – be sure to thaw, of course, according to the package if frozen).
  • Butter – I always use salted buter because in my experience, it lends the best flavor, but feel free to use unsalted butter if that’s what you prefer.
  • Seasonings – We’re using Italian seasoning and garlic powder to pack in the flavor!
  • Cheese – I used Monterrey jack, but you can use cheddar or colby jack! Any cheese that melts well works here.

How to Make this Pull Apart Rolls Recipe:

Step 1: Prepare the Rolls. Cube your cheese. Mix the spices together in a small bowl. Slightly flatten out one of the rolls. Place 3-5 small chunks of cheese on the roll, and fold the edges over, pinching to seal the bottom, pushing the cheese up towards the top of the roll. Repeat with remaining rolls.

Step 3: Ready for the Oven. Spray your pans with nonstick spray & place the rolls inside. Brush the tops of the rolls with the melted butter, & sprinkle on the spices.

Step 4: Bake the Rolls. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Brush with a little more butter and enjoy while they’re hot!

Serving + Storing:

Store leftovers, in an airtight container, in the fridge for 1-2 days. These rolls can be reheated in the pan, in the oven – BUT they’re really best fresh!

Cheesy garlic herb rolls are what dinner roll dreams are made of. They pair perfectly with my one pan chicken with garlic butter tomato sauce or lemon garlic chicken with asparagus, beer braised short ribs, or your favorite cozy main dishes.

Expert Cooking Tips:

  • Oven Thermometer – An oven thermometer will tell you if your oven is actually running at the temperature you set it to. Your oven may not be accurate. Accurate oven temperature is crucial for most bakes, so I leave an oven thermometer in at all times to keep an eye on my oven’s calibration.
  • Butter is Better – Don’t skimp on the butter!

FAQs:

Can I make these rolls from scratch?

I have not tried making cheese-stuffed pull apart rolls from scratch. But you certainly can give it a try! Simply use your favorite scratch-made dinner roll recipe.

Can I halve this recipe?

Sure you can! As-is this garlic herb pull apart bread recipe makes roughly 15 rolls. Halving it will give you 7-8 rolls.

Ingredients

  • 1 package Rhodes Thaw, Rise & Bake rolls, Or any similar ready made bread dough/pizza dough
  • 1/4 cup salted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 16 ounces Monterrey Jack cheese, in block form

For Serving

  • 2-3 tbsp salted butter, melted

Instructions

  • If Frozen: If using a frozen ready-made bread or pizza dough, thaw according to package directions.
  • Prepare rolls: Preheat oven to 350℉. Cut the blocks of cheese into bite-sized cubes. Mix the spices together in a small bowl. Slightly flatten out one of the rolls. (If not using the Rhodes option, you'll need to cut your piece dough into equal portions – one loaf of dough should give you 7-8 rolls.) Place 3-5 small chunks of cheese on the roll, and fold the edges over, pinching to seal the bottom, pushing the cheese up towards the top of the roll. (If it's bursting back open, try using a little less cheese.) Repeat with remaining rolls.
Spray two 9-inch round pans with nonstick spray and place the rolls inside. Brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter, and sprinkle the spices over each pan of rolls.
  • Bake rolls: Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Brush with a little more butter and enjoy while they’re hot!
  • Store: Store leftovers, covered, in the fridge for a day or two. These rolls can be reheated in the oven – BUT they're really best when fresh!

Notes

Ready-Made Dough: Most major grocery stores have some sort of ready made bread or pizza dough in the freezer section, or sometimes in a refrigerated area.
Cheese: I found that the cheese melted better in the rolls when I used a few small pieces, instead of one larger chunk of cheese.
